Metal Scrap is waste or residual metal materials, generated by: industrial processes, demolition, decommissioning of plants and equipment, end-of-life vehicles, consumer products that have reached the end of their life. They fall into the category of special waste, but represent a strategic resource for the metallurgical industry due to their high recovery potential. Metal scrap can include: a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including: iron, steel, cast iron, aluminum, copper, brass, lead, stainless steel, other.
The recycling of metal scrap is essential for the metallurgical industry because it allows to: recover valuable raw materials, reduce the extraction of natural resources, reduce energy consumption and limit environmental impact. After collection and sorting, the scrap metal is treated, melted down and reused in the production of new products and manufactured goods.
From metal scraps to End of Waste (EoW)
In order for metal scrap to cease to be classified as waste and become End of Waste (EoW), for subsequent use in steel mills, foundries, refineries, etc., it must comply with the technical and regulatory requirements provided for by art. 184-ter of Legislative Decree 152/2006 as amended and EU Regulations:
- Reg. (EU) No. 333/2011: for scrap iron, steel and aluminium;
- Reg. (EU) No. 715/2013: for copper scrap.
These regulations go beyond the concept of “all waste”, introducing detailed procedures on recycling and recovery operations and promoting an efficient and sustainable circular economy.
