WEEE - Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment

WEEE, an acronym for Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment, includes all those devices that, in order to function, depend on electricity, whether they are connected to the grid or powered by batteries and batteries, which you want to get rid of because they are no longer functional or obsolete.

The technical definition of WEEE is contained in Article 4, letter e) of Legislative Decree 49/2014, the reference legislation on material at national level. It refers to “electrical or electronic equipment that is waste pursuant to Article 183, paragraph 1, letter a) of Legislative Decree no. 152 of 3 April 2006, including all components, subassemblies and consumables that are an integral part of the product at the time when the holder discards, intends or is obliged to discard it”. This waste is easily recognized from other waste thanks to the symbol of the crossed-out wheeled bin and is divided into two categories: domestic WEEE and professional WEEE.

Household WEEE

Household WEEE is electronic waste generated by households and households, as well as waste from commercial, industrial, institutional or other activities, as long as it is similar to that generated by households. This waste is divided into five main groups:

  • equipment for the exchange of temperature with fluids: refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dryers, etc.;
  • other large whites: washing machines, dishwashers, ovens;
  • TVs and monitors: televisions and flat screens, televisions and cathode ray tube screens, tablets, digital picture frames, etc.;
  • IT, consumer electronics, lighting, PEDs and others: small household appliances, electronic or digital devices, lighting equipment, photovoltaic panels, etc.;
  • Light sources: discharge lamps, fluorescent lamps, neon tubes, LED bulbs and the like.

The WEEE Coordination Centre is the point of reference for all those involved in the chain of waste from electrical and electronic equipment in Italy. Based on Decree no. 40 of 20 February 2023,  as amended, provides guidance for the correct division of end-of-life Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) into the various groups.

Professional WEEE

This is electronic waste other than that from households. Professional WEEE is divided into five categories:

  • category 1: temperature exchange equipment;
  • category 2: Screens and monitors;
  • category 4: large equipment;
  • category 5 small equipment;
  • category 6: Small IT and telecommunications equipment.
